Synonyms:
Common names: Kabalabala (Kaonde) Msolo (Nyanja) Mukunku (Tonga: Zambia) Mukuñu (Lozi) Musalya (Lunda) Musangati (Bemba) Musolo (Bemba) Musolo (Tonga: Zambia)
Frequency: Common
Status: Native
Description:
Small tree. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate to rounded; margin entire. The leaves display bright autumn colours of yellow or red. Flowers in few-flowered axillary clusters, small and inconspicuous, pale green, unisexual on separate trees. Fruit ovoid to subspherical, slightly grooved, consisting of a 3-locular woody capsule enclosed in a leathery test, yellow when ripe.
Type location:
Notes: A variable species with at least three varieties recorded for our region, the variation being chiefly in the indumentum. All varieties are widespread and hardly differ in their ecology. Since we have many records where the variety has not been determined, we have created this aggregate taxon to accommodate these records.
Pollinator:The flowers are very attractive to honeybees.
Seed dispersal:Ungulates ingest the fruits to digest the leathery test, and spit out the woody capsules, which split to release the seeds. Rodents, notably the Gambian Pouched Rat, eat the seeds. The seeds survive passage through the gut of elephants.
Parasite:The mistletoe Tapipyllum erianthus (Sprague) Danser
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In deciduous woodland, wooded grassland, riverine fringes and on rocky outcrops.
Altitude range: Up to 1620 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: From DRC, Burundi and Tanzania to Namibia and northern South Africa.
