Description:
Suffrutex with several erect, simple or rarely sparsely branched stems 30 - 100(130) cm high. Stems thinly to densely covered with short appressed hairs interspersed with long spreading hairs (up to 2 mm). Leaves up to 13.5 x 3.2 cm, 2.5 - 10 times as long as broad, narrowly elliptic or oblong-lanceolate to linear-oblanceolate to linear, cuneate to rounded at the base, subacute to rounded at the apex, densely appressed-pubescent when young and more sparsely so at maturity but rarely becoming completely glabrous. Flowers (2.5)3 - 5.5 cm long, white to pink, red or orange-red. Heads (4)5 - 10 cm diameter. Middle bracts 1.5 - 3.3 x 1 - 2 cm; inner bracts 4.5 - 6.5 x 0.4 - 0.8 cm. Perianth villous outside except for the lower part of the base, glabrous inside or with short hairs near margin at junction of claw and base, perhaps rarely hairy inside claw; limb 8 - 20(22) mm long.
This subspecies differs from the others in the perianth being white and with the perianth limb being 14 - 20(22) mm long.
