Tree up to 30 m. tall, with buttressed bole. Leaves simple, unlobed, broadly oblong to oblong-obovate, discolorous, glabrous above, very densely tomentellous below, with white stellate hairs. Panicles axillary and terminal, violet-tomentose.

Derivation of specific name: Subviolacea – refers to the violet or purple hairs on the inflorescences
Habitat: Riverine and swamp forest.
