Description:
Robust annual herb up to 1.5 m tall with a hollow, somewhat inflated stem up to 2 cm in diameter, more or less densely covered in whitish, non-glandular ciliate hairs. Leaves alternate, elliptic-ovate, up to 12 cm long; margin serrate; petiole up to 2 cm long; stipules ovate-lanceolate, 2-8 mm long, slightly fimbriate. Inflorescences axillary, up to 10 cm long. Flowers unisexual with male flowers soon falling and 1-3 female flowers per inflorescence; sepals green; petals white. Fruit 3-lobed, 7-9 mm wide, coarsely echinate.

Notes: Generally similar to C. stuhlmannii but not glanduliferous, generally more robust with thicker stems and larger, more coarsely echinate fruit.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: On river banks, floodplains and dambos, in heavy black clay or sandy soils, usually semi-aquatic in seasonally waterlogged or permanently moist ground.
