Common names:
Status: Native
Decumbent perennial herb, rooting at the nodes, with ascending shoots up to 1.4 m high. Leaves spirally arranged, narrowly lanceolate to elliptic, 7-18 cm long, sheathing at the subpetiolate base for 1-4 cm, hairless or sparsely puberulous beneath; margin scabrid. Inflorescences terminal on the shoots, ovoid or cylindric, up to 6 cm long, very densely many-flowered. Flowers mostly 7-10 mm wide, white, pale lilac, lavender or violet.
Type location:
Derivation of specific name: beniniense: of Benin, although the the type specimen was actually collected close to the border in Nigeria.
Habitat: Along edges and in clearings in evergreen forest, riverine forest and swamp forest.

Worldwide distribution: Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea (incl. Bioko), Principe, Gabon, Chad, CAR, Congo-Brazzaville, DRC, Burundi, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Zambia.
