Subshrub 15–60 cm tall, with several erect or ± procumbent slender woody shoots from an underground rhizome; shoots at first scabrid yellowish-pubescent, later more or less glabrous and dark purplish-red. Leaves paired, not in whorls, 3–10 × 0.9–3.2 cm, elliptic, oblong, obovate-oblong or oblanceolate, rounded to subacute or obscurely acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, petiole c. 5 mm long; stipules 2 mm long, triangular, with appendages 2 mm long. Inflorescences borne at (1)3–6 nodes, 10–20-flowered, bristly pubescent; the inflorescence pair at each node forming a dense cluster up to 3.5 cm wide; peduncles and pedicels 3–5 mm long. Calyx tube 1.2 mm long, globose, densely pubescent; lobes 4–6.5 × 0.7–1 mm, linear, more sparsely pubescent. Corolla 5-tailed at apex in bud; tube 5.5 mm long, cylindrical to funnel-shaped, glabrous at base, densely bristly pubescent above; lobes 2–3 × 1.5–1.8 mm, triangular, with a terminal appendage 1.5–2 mm long. Pollen presenter shortly exserted, cylindrical, 10-grooved, 5-lobed at apex. Fruit yellow to orange, 1.2 cm in diameter, globose, said to be glossy, very sparsely pubescent; pyrenes small 6 × 5 × 3 mm. |
