Description: |
Aromatic, perennial suffrutex with several stems up to 90 cm long arising from a horizontal tuberous rootstock. Leaves elliptic to ovate, 20-14- mm long, more or less densely hairy on both surfaces and with red sessile glands; margin toothed with 1-3 smaller teeth on each larger one; petiole 2-8 mm long. Inflorescence branched, lax or condensed, with 6-flowered clusters 5-20 mm apart. Calyx 2-4 mm long, hairy and with red sessile glands. Corolla deep reddish purple, 10-18 mm long, 2-lipped with both lips more or less equal in length; upper lip often paler with darker stripes. |

Notes: | This subspecies differs from the more widespread subsp. viphyensis by the elliptic to ovate leaves with a shorter petiole and is found in higher altitude montane grassland habitat. |
