Description:
Erect perennial herb, growing from a carrot-shaped tuberous rootstock. Stems usually single, milky sap present. Leaves opposite, linear-oblong to lanceolate, up to 20 cm long, sparsely hairy on both surfaces; base slightly cordate. Flowers in terminal or extra-axillary 3-10-flowered subspherical umbels. Corolla 5-lobed nearly to the base, mostly violet, purple, magenta or white, sparsely hairy outside, hairless inside. Corona lobes arising from the base of the staminal column, basal part clawed with 2 teeth; upper orbicular, abruptly narrowing into the petal-like claw. Fruit in 2 erect follicles, narrowly spindle-shaped, smooth, pubescent.

Habitat: Seasonally inundated, often burnt grassland.
