Description:
Erect, single to few-stemmed herb up to 50 cm high, growing from a conical to spherical tuber up to 10 cm in diameter. Leaves ascending to spreading linear to very narrowly ovate, 5–19 cm long, hairless with only midrib and margin hairy or scabrous, or sparsely hairy or scabrous all over, dark green and sometimes densely dotted above, paler green and densely dotted beneath; margin reddish; petiole 2–5 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, rarely also subterminal, many-flowered, globose, hairy; peduncles 1–4.5 cm long, pedicels c. 2 mm long. Sepals subulate to narrowly triangular, 2–3 mm long, hairy outside. Corolla hairy outside, hairless inside; tube 2–3 mm long, campanulate; lobes ovate to triangular, 3–4 mm long, whitish green, creamy or yellowish, sometimes tinged violet, brown or red, tips purple, pink or red. Corona pale green tinged purple, lobes tri-segmented; central segment 2–3 mm long, filiform, papillose, apex twirled; lateral segments C. 1.5 mm long, hairless. Follicles solitary, erect, cylindrical-ovoid tapering into a blunt tip, c. 7.5 cm long, hairless, smooth.

Habitat: in highland savanna, grassland and forest. On a variety of soils ranging from rocky shallow soils to deeper loamy soils.
