Description of the genus

Annual or short-lived perennial. Inflorescence a lax open panicle. Spikelets 8-18(-many)-flowered, laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets; florets bisexual but uppermost may be reduced. Glumes persistent, slightly unequal, keeled, 3(-5)-nerved; middle nerve sometimes excurrent into a short awn. Lemmas 7-nerved, apex 2-fid, with a short mucro between the lobes.

Worldwide: 1 species in tropical Africa
