Description of the genus

Perennial. Ligule a very short membrane; leaf laminas involute. Inflorescence a single terminal or axillary raceme; raceme cylindric, the spikelets borne singly on alternate sides of the rhachis; internodes semicylindric, strongly oblique at base and apex. Spikelet sessile, sunk in the internode; callus obtuse; inferior glume coriaceous, broadly convex; inferior floret reduced to a hyaline lemma; superior lemma entire and awnless. Caryopsis oblong-elliptic, dorsally compressed.

Worldwide: One species in tropical Africa and Madagascar.
