Description of the genus

Trees with trunk erect with candelabrum-like branching, prickly, with stilt-roots. Leaves strap-shaped, pleated, with prickles along the margins and midrib.

Derivation of name: latinised form of a Malayan name.

Worldwide: About 600 species in the Old World tropics and subtropics, with ±15 in Africa.
