Description of the genus

Dioecious reddish parasites, with a large irregular tuber, which does not produce rhizomes. Leaves scale-like, many, spirally arranged. Inflorescence much-branched, bearing unisexual flowers. Male plants: inflorescence branches bearing flowers in groups of 2-4 on short secondary branches, each branch subtended by a bract; male flowers 3(-4)-merous. Female plants: inflorescence branches with 5-12 subglobular spadix-like clusters of ± 200 flowers sunk in a common receptacle; style 0. Fruit a syncarp the fruits forming a spherical berry.

Worldwide: 2 species occurring in Africa
