| Notes: | 8 to 10 inches high, branching herb from a woody rootstock. Stems dark reddish, pubescent. Leaves opposite or whirled, dark, reddish, folded. Flowers arranged on spike in a cruciform manner, sessile with tiny bracts. Tubular calyx divided into 5 lobes at tip. Flowers mauve, tubular, opening into five, equal, flat rounded lobes, Flowers approximately 1 cm in diameter and four are open at one time on each spike. |
