Description:
Annual or short-lived perennial grass, up to 1 m. A sparsely tufted grass with relatively few leaves. Inflorescence a long and slender spike. Spikelets densely packed along the rhachis with long, hair-like awns.

Derivation of specific name: patens: spreading, diverging from the axis at almost 90 degrees
Habitat: Often a pioneer in eroded places and sandy soils in cultivated and disturbed areas and along roadsides.
