Robust, caespitose perennial; culms up to 220 cm high. Leaves smooth; ligule 2.5–3.5 mm long, erose; laminas 30–40 cm × 8–35 mm, tapering to a fine point at the apex. Inflorescence a dense subovoid to globose head 5–19(30) cm long, greenish. Racemes 10–14 mm long; internodes and pedicels pilose with silvery-white hairs. Sessile spikelet 3–4 mm long, glabrous; inferior glume with an often shallow V-shaped median groove, narrowly winged on the keels; superior lemma inconspicuous, entire; awn delicate, 3.5–5 mm long, without a column; anthers 1–1.5 mm long, purple.
