Description:
Perennial, up to 1 m tall.
FTEA does not recognize subspecific taxa, but notes that the species is very polymorphic. According to Gordon-Gray var. longus is never weedy, occurring in natural environments and is relatively rare, while var. tenuiflorus tends to be weedy and is frequently confused with the notorious weed C. rotundus, differing only in the faintly swollen stem bases and somewhat shorter glumes.

Notes: According to Gordon-Gray var. longus is not weedy, whereas var. tenuiflorus frequently is so.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: Lake edges, ditches, black cotton soil, periodically flooded areas in grassland.
