Common names:
Status: Native
Erect perennial herb, up to 1 m high, with a bad smell. Stems normally unbranched below the inflorescence, internodes conspicuously ridged and hairy. Leaves mainly basal but also in a few opposite pairs along the stem, mostly pinnate with the terminal leaflet larger than the lateral leaflets. The leaflets are much narrower and finer on the upper leaves, margins irregularly dentate. Inflorescence branched, up to 30 × 10 cm. Flowers small, white, often pink in bud.

South Africa
Notes: Zimbabwean records of Valeriana capensis have been named var. capensis. The variety of the Zambian plants is not known but we have provisionally also placed them under var. capensis.

Habitat: In vleis, marshy areas and stream sides.
Altitude range: 1800 - 2200 m

Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
