Description of the genus

Palms, solitary, stems erect, robust, unarmed bearing conspicuous nodal rings; crownshaft absent. Leaves petiole unarmed; lamina pinnate, unarmed; plication reduplicate; segments regularly arranged in multiple planes; apices acute. Inflorescence axillary within crown of leaves; paniculate with 1 order of branching, ascending becoming pendulous in fruit; flowers sessile, borne in triads Flowers sepals 3, connate; petals 3 valvate, leathery. Fruit drupe, ovoid, exocarp orange.

Worldwide: 32 species in N America and W Indies.
