Description of the genus

Herbs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite-decussate, simple, lobed or pinnatipartite. Flowers in long terminal spikes or shorter spike-like racemes. Calyx tubular, conspicuous. Corolla white or yellowish, funnel- or salver-shaped.Stamens 4. Fruit a schizocarp, enclosed within the persistent calyx; mericarps 2, ribbed on the outer surface, 1-seeded, separating from or remaining united to each other.

Worldwide: c.25 species, mainly Africa, but also occurring in Madagascar, Arabia, Pakistan and India
