Description of the genus

Perennials. Leaf lamina rigid and pungent. Inflorescence dense and spike-like, composed of short crowded ± secund racemes. Spikelets several-flowered, slightly laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes 1-nerved, shorter than the lemmas, scarious. Lemmas 3-nerved, silky-villous along the lateral nerves, minutely 2-toothed at the apex and mucronate.

Worldwide: 2 species occurring in Arabia and Ethiopia southwards to South Africa and Namibia.

Zambia: 1 taxon.
